Current and Upcoming Exhibits

August 18, 2023 – October 7, 2023

Outcry – OUTCRY is an intersectional social practice project in which womxn have the opportunity to take up space, be witnessed and heard, while joining forces in an act of defiance against the white supremacist patriarchy. Whitney Bradshaw launched her OUTCRY project on the night of the Women’s March in 2018, since then this series has grown to more than four hundred fifty portraits of womxn from all walks of life who have chosen to take a stand against a culture that too often dismisses womxn’s voices. Drawing from her background in social work, the Chicago-based artist invites groups of womxn who are not previously acquainted with each other into her studio for “scream sessions,” where they can express emotions—ranging from rage to sorrow to laughter—and share personal stories in a brave and supportive environment designed to cultivate a spirit of feminist solidarity across different life experiences. The resulting photographic portraits challenge expectations around how womxn—and in particular, womxn’s anger—are portrayed in portraiture and mainstream culture. Together these intimate representations of womxn’s power and expression that Bradshaw captures, become a monumental act of collective resistance. Bradshaw uses the term “womxn” as “an inclusive, if imperfect, term to encompass cis-gendered women, transwomen, and nonbinary and genderqueer people who experience the world in femme bodies.”

Exhibit Opportunity:  Oceans of Longing

Description: There is a general sense of longing that is tugging humanity in complex ways. A yearning for true connection. A familiar aching, craving feeling that comes from wanting something that feels out of reach. Perhaps a more authentic connection with a person, deeply wishing for career change, a freedom of expression, or wanting to change a situation; a thirst to change our lives. These days, connections often exist behind a screen and the nuances of feeling and emotion without personal interactions become ambiguous. We find ourselves living in an increasingly curated and polished world, and we often can’t help but to measure our own lives and experiences against this shiny facade. There is a collective sense of losing personal connections with others, and also with ourselves. It may be easy to think we alone yearn for true connection, friendship, love, community, to be truly seen. Perhaps each of us feel isolated in our longings, and do not yet realize there are entire oceans of longing among us. Perhaps by sharing our yearning we can not only feel less alone, but actually be less alone. 40 West Gallery is accepting artwork from artists of all levels of experience exploring your oceans of longing. All mediums considered. Artists are invited to submit up to four hanging OR three 3-D works via email for consideration. (See details below on how to submit digital images for jurying). Application fees for this show are $5 per item for 40 West members and $10 per item for non-members. FREE for youth (under age 21) artists and students.
